If you have not yet given, please consider a gift today and help us meet our goal. Remember, our parish will receive 25 percent of all funds we raise above our goal. Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battlefield,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary.
Last Saturday, June 27, the parish pastoral council met for our final gathering until Fall 2009. We began with a reflection from Mark 4: Jesus Calms the Seas, and shared our journey together as a parish through the recent Spring and upcoming Summer activities and ministries. We also shared results from the small group meetings on the parish mission statement and reflected on the parish response.
St. Mark Parish is taking a first step in creating a parish mission statement. Forming a mission statement is a process of putting into words the essential values, purpose, and actions of the parish, to guide us into the present-future. We are having reflective conversation about who we are, what we are about as a parish, and how we are called to further Christ’s mission in the future.
Parishioners are addressing concerns about the economy. Parish-community members volunteered to research and distribute information about resources (financial assistance, food pantries, legal services, foreclosure aid, education services, etc.). Parishioners are also interested in a parish job network and encourage those who know about available jobs to notify the parish for job postings.
